![]() The Maverick's styling featured the long hood, fastback roof, and short deck popularized by the Mustang, on a 103-inch (2,616 mm) wheelbase - and featured pop-out rear side windows. A bigger Falcon was a rebranded low-trim version of the Fairlane for the second half of the model year, then went away. Consequently, the Falcon was discontinued midway through the 1970 model year, and the Maverick repositioned as Ford's compact entry, giving the Nova and Dart a new rival. The Falcon, Ford's compact offering since 1960 and main rival to the Chevrolet Nova and Dodge Dart, had seen its sales decimated by the introduction of the Mustang in 1964, and despite a redesign in 1966, was unable to meet the then forthcoming U.S. It was originally conceived and marketed as a subcompact "import fighter", intended to compete against the newer Japanese rivals for North America, then primarily from Datsun and Toyota. The Maverick was introduced on April 17, 1969, as a 1970 model at a very competitive price point of $1,995 ($15,033 in 2022 dollars ). The name " maverick" was derived from the word for unbranded range animals, and the car's nameplate was stylized to resemble the head of Longhorn cattle. The Maverick was also manufactured in Venezuela, Canada, Mexico, and from 1973 to 1979, in Brazil. The Maverick replaced the Falcon in most of the world, butĪustralia kept selling and developing the Falcon. In solid shape, with low miles, and great looks, this Grabber is hard to deny.The Ford Maverick is a compact car manufactured and marketed by Ford for model years 1970–1977 in the United States, originally as a two-door sedan employing a rear-wheel drive platform original to the 1960 Falcon - and subsequently as a four-door sedan on the same platform. The color combination on this Maverick is fantastic and really has a great muscle car appeal. Grabbers also came with this nice but subtle rear spoiler, along with the striping down the sides with the Grabber logo. The paint and chrome looks excellent on this Maverick. This hood was offered on 71-72 Grabbers only. ![]() Since this is a 1972 Grabber, it has this neat twin scoop hood. From the photos, the quarters look nice, further information would certainly be welcomed on this Ford. We are unsure if that means the car has been repainted, or putty was smeared over minor quarter rust, or what exactly the seller means. The car looks to be a solid survivor, but the seller has mentioned that there is “putty” in the quarters. The seller apparently had the car running at some point but we are guessing it hasn’t run in a while. Power comes from a Ford 302 cubic inch V8. The floor mounted manual shifter draws you in a little more on this cool Ford. The carpet still looks rather plush and not faded. The dash, seats and door panels are very nice, with only a few ripples in the door panels. The interior of this Maverick is excellent. Find it here on craigslist out of Monaca, Pennsylvania. With an asking price $8,000 we are enticed by this muscular Maverick. ![]() In beautiful shape, this Grabber looks to have only covered around 65,000 miles. This Maverick is optioned with the “Grabber” package, which added some neat features to the Maverick. When thinking of muscle cars, the Maverick is not usually the first car that comes to mind. ![]()
